Our History

Maypole F.C.. Established 1975

The Journey of Maypole F.C.

Maypole F.C. began its journey at the Maypole Youth Centre on Idminston Croft, where the club first introduced association football for boys of all ages. In its early years, the club joined the Central Warwickshire Youth Football League with just three teams. Home fixtures were played at Silver Street in Wythall, while training sessions took place at Daisy Farm Park. Like many grassroots clubs, everything was sustained through player subscriptions, small grants, and strong community fundraising.

In 1978, the club made a significant step forward by forming its first open-age team, made up of players who had progressed through the youth ranks. The team enjoyed immediate success, climbing from Division 7 through to the Premier Division, establishing a competitive foundation that still drives the club today.

By 1980, Maypole introduced its now-iconic club kit: red and black striped shirts, black shorts, and black or red socks—colours that remain central to the club’s identity.

A major milestone followed in 1987, when, after years of dedicated fundraising and grant support, the club secured its own clubhouse and obtained the lease for the old Rover ground on Greenaleigh Road, which remains the home of Maypole F.C. to this day.

Growth continued, and in 1988, the formation of Maypole United enabled the club to field multiple teams within the same age group. Over time, the club expanded further with the addition of Maypole Lions, Maypole Juniors, and more recently Maypole Colts, reflecting the ever-increasing number of players and teams under the Maypole banner.

Leadership & Recent Growth

In August 2025, Jay (Chair) and Callum (Vice Chair) were appointed, marking the beginning of a new era for Maypole F.C.

In a short space of time, alongside a committed and hardworking committee team, their leadership has reignited the identity of the club, restoring pride, unity, and a clear sense of direction both on and off the pitch. There has been a strong emphasis on raising standards, strengthening club culture, improving communication, and reconnecting with the local community, ensuring that Maypole remains a welcoming and progressive environment for all.

Since their appointment, the club has grown from 23 youth teams, with plans already in place to expand to 32 teams, including significant development within the girls pathway from Under-8s through to Under-16s.

Off the pitch, the committee have played a crucial role in enhancing organisation, structure, and long-term sustainability, helping to build a more professional and forward-thinking football environment.

The club is also introducing a disability football pathway, reinforcing its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, and ensuring opportunities are available to all members of the community regardless of ability.

Together, the leadership and committee are driving the club forward - honouring its history while building a modern, ambitious, and inclusive future.

Now, 50 years on, Maypole F.C. stands as a thriving, community-driven football club that continues to evolve while staying true to its roots.

Building on the momentum created across the club, Maypole now provides a complete football pathway, with teams ranging from Under-7s all the way through to adult football, allowing players to begin their journey at a young age and remain part of the club for years to come.

The club fields two to four teams in most age groups, providing opportunities for players of all abilities to train, develop, and compete in a positive and supportive environment.

Our teams compete weekly in the Central Warwickshire Youth Football League and the Central Warwickshire Girls Football League, maintaining a strong presence across both boys and girls grassroots football.

With continued growth in the girls pathway, the introduction of a disability football programme, and a clear focus on community engagement, Maypole F.C. is not only reflecting on its proud history - but actively shaping its future.

From humble beginnings to a fully inclusive, multi-team football club, Maypole F.C. continues to bring people together through the love of the game.
